For this project we picked a disease and had to describe in detail everything about it. We picked alzheimers disease. There were some problems with group mates getting along with each other, (my self and someone else) but we ended up getting the project done despite our differences. There were many lessons learned and lots of information taken in.
So alzheimers disease is a progressive mental deterioration disease that can occur in middle to old age. Anyone is able to get alzheimers. There are no known treatments for alzheimers or prevention medication. There is a new drug being tested to prevent alzheimers. But there are many ways in living your life that you can prevent it. You can prevent it by not smoking, eating healthy, and exercising, so basicly just living a healthy lifestyle. you can also get it if you have diabetes, HD, stroke, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
In the protein, normal APP is used yo repair brain neurons, unused APP disolves with time. Mutated APP is non-saluble causing plaque build ups over time. The APP palques can lead to dimentia, hemorages, and eventually death. The protein affected is, amyloid presursor protein.
Definition of disease vocab
Amino acid: a simple organic compound containing both a carboxyl group
RNA types:
mRNA: Messenger RNA: Encodes amino acid sequence of a polypeptide.
tRNA: Transfer RNA: Brings amino acids to ribosomes during translation.
rRNA: Ribosomal RNA: With ribosomal proteins, makes up the ribosomes, the organelles that translate the mRNA.
codon:a sequence of three nucleotides that together form a unit of genetic code in a DNA or RNA molecule.
anticodon: a sequence of three nucleotides forming a unit of genetic code in a transfer RNA molecule, corresponding to a complementary codon in messenger RNA.
polymerse: an enzyme that brings about the formation of a particular polymer, especially DNA or RNA.
Proteins: any of a class of nitrogenous organic compounds that consist of large molecules composed of one or more long chains of amino acids and are an essential part of all living organisms, especially as structural components of body tissues such as muscle, hair, collagen, etc., and as enzymes and antibodies.
Translation: the process by which a sequence of nucleotide triplets in a messenger RNA molecule gives rise to a specific sequence of amino acids during synthesis of a polypeptide or protein.
Transcription: the process by which genetic information represented by a sequence of DNA nucleotides is copied into newly synthesized molecules of RNA, with the DNA serving as a template.
Alpha helix: The coiled structure of many proteins consisting of a single chain of amino acids stabilized by hydrogen bonds.
Beta sheet: the structural arrangement of many proteins in which two or more short regions of the polypeptide chain align adjacently and are stabilized by hydrogen bonds into sheets with a pleated or accordion like appearance
For the project we wanted to make a video about our disease but we had a limited amount of time. So we decided to make a poster instead. We included all of the necessary information about the disease( the affected proteins, parts of the body, barriers, etc). Most of us did an equal workload but we made sure that our information was correct and we kept track of the sites that we used.
Overall this project was one of my least favorites. But our work was done thurowly and we worked very hard to make it that way. Our group was not usually in an agreement, (it never was) but we finished the project and did it to the best of our abilities. I was pleased with the amount of work that I did, and the quality of the work that I did. If I could do It again I would definatly make sure we did the work first, and the messing around when we were all done. The group communication and focus at first were poor, but everything else we did seemed to cancel it out. The pit of our project was the first day when the project was not taken seriously and focused on, but the peak was when we were in the middle of the project. I learned that I worked well with people who would listen and take responsibility for their actions, but did not work well with people who blamed others.
